Make your rug the centrepiece

A larger rug should ideally be positioned in the centre of the room to create a balanced and harmonious overall appearance. If it is placed too far to one side, the space can quickly feel uneven and visually unsettled. It’s also important to maintain a consistent distance from the surrounding walls. The most effective look is often achieved when a key piece of furniture is positioned centrally on the rug.

When configuring your custom rug, it’s worth exploring the different edge options available. If you’d like to create a more distinctive visual frame, a bordered edge in a contrasting colour can be the perfect finishing touch.

Connect your furniture with the rug

Everything that belongs to a seating or living area should overlap with the rug to some extent. Even 25 cm is enough to create a visual connection and make the space feel more cohesive. Furniture placed completely outside the rug can appear disconnected and make the room feel less balanced.

One exception is a TV unit, as it is not used for seating. For practical reasons, it is usually positioned directly against a wall and does not need to be connected to the rug.

We recommend ensuring that your furniture has enough space on the rug. When pieces are positioned too closely together, the overall look can quickly feel crowded and unbalanced.

Ideally, the rug should be large enough to comfortably accommodate the furniture within the seating area. If you'd like to create a stronger visual contrast, you can deliberately choose a smaller rug and position the furniture around it instead. Whatever style you choose, make sure there is sufficient space between the individual pieces of furniture.

Our tip: Don’t be afraid of choosing a rug that feels “too large”. Extra rug space around your furniture helps create a more comfortable living environment and clearly defines the area within the room.

Your rug should be at least as wide as your sofa. Ideally, it should extend slightly beyond it on both sides. If the rug is noticeably smaller, the sofa can appear oversized, making the entire room feel visually unbalanced.

It’s also worth paying attention to the relationship between the colour of your sofa and your rug. As the two largest design elements in most living rooms, they should complement each other and contribute to a cohesive overall look.

A rug with bold patterns or strong contrasts naturally draws attention. In smaller rooms, this can make the rug the main focal point, which may also emphasise the size of the space itself.

If the rug is small, the room can appear smaller as well. More subtle patterns or tone-on-tone designs, on the other hand, tend to create a lighter and more spacious feel, helping the room appear larger and more open.
